Arrangements were also made with the Divisional Medical Officer for about
100 members of the Borough Council' s staff to receive poliomyelitis vaccination
under this scheme at clinic sessions held at the Town Hall.

In order to draw attention to the law concerning the minding of children, the London
County Council, through the local Health Divisions, issued a leaflet printed separately in
English, Greek and Turkish. At the reo.uest of the Divisional Medical Officer, 750 of these
leaflets in English and 250 each in Greek and Turkish were distributed through the Public
Health Department staff and 200 leaflets through the Housing Department to Council tenants
Cancer Education
Another leaflet produced by the London County Council was on the subject of cancer
education, and 1.200 copies were distributed through the Public Health Department and Public
Libraries.
Mental Health Week
With the intention of publicising and stimulation activity in all matters relating to
mental health, 1960 was designated Mental Health Year, and the Ministry of Health produced
in connection with this a poster and leaflet showing the essential elements of a comprehensive
Mental Health Service. In addition special activities during Mental Health Week, 9th to 16th
July, were entered into by the London County Council, who also issued a leaflet for the occasion
Through the Public Health Department, the Borough Council participated by the display or
distribution of 30 copies of the above-mentioned poster and 2,000 copies of both leaflets.
Regular health education and publicity by means of posters and leaflets continued
throughout the year. Most of this publicity matter is obtained from the Central Council for
Health Education and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, but use is also made
of material issued by the Ministry of Health and occasionally by other organisations
Conferences and Courses
The Congress of the Royal Society of Health, 25th to 29th April, was attended by Councillor
Hyde and the Medical Officer of Health, and the Annual Conference of the Association of Public
Health Inspectors, 20th to 23rd September, by Alderman A.J. Rogers and the Chief Public Health
Inspector. At a Central Council for Health Education Seminar on ' The Role of the Medical Officer
of Health in Health Education'' , attendance was shared by the Medical Officer of Health and
Deputy Medical Officer of Health, and a Central Council Conference on "Health Education as a
part of Social Work'' was attended by the Deputy Medical Officer of Health.
