Slaughterhouses.—There were 26 slaughterhouses on the register, but
before the end of October they were reduced to 22. The premises were
found to be well kept. 4 premises were vacated during the year owing, it
was stated, to the prevailing high prices of meat. The Inspector paid 1,303
visits to the premises, and found that the slaughtering was satisfactorily conducted,
and that the slaughtered animals were of good quality and remarkably
free from disease.
The slaughtering of animals for food consumption in the borough is
gradually decreasing as butchers now deal largely in the meat of animals which
have been slaughtered in public abattoirs elsewhere. The War has, however,
considerably checked the importation of foreign, chilled and frozen meat for
home consumption. How far this will stimulate the market for home-bred cattle
remains to be seen. In Islington there was an increase of 1,458 sheep and
lamb killed in comparison with the year 1914.
The number of animals slaughtered in the borough was 27,828, of which
947 were oxen, 8 were calves, 26,859 sheep and lambs, and 14 pigs.
