Street Paving.
It is satisfactory to be able to report that a considerable extension
of this useful hygienic work has been carried on during the
year, a large number of additional streets in the Borough having
been paved with impermeable material to the already considerable
number thus paved. As I have already pointed out in previous
annual reports the advantages of this method of paving from the
public health standpoint cannot be over-estimated, and I have not
the slightest hesitation in stating that the high position which
Battersea has attained in metropolitan public health statistics is
to some extent to be attributed to the action of the Council in
continuing this policy of paving the streets of the Borough with
a material which minimises the risk of spreading infection through
germ laden dust. In the more crowded and less sanitary districts
of the Borough the side streets are largely used as playgrounds
by the children, and it becomes therefore a matter of great importance
to provide roadways which can be kept readily scavenged,
a not easily obtainable feature of the ordinary macadam
thoroughfare.
During 1912 the following streets were partly or wholly paved with impervious material:—

Sewer Ventilation.
During the year complaints were received on several occasions
of nuisance arising from sewer ventilators on the surface of the
roadway or from upcast columns. These complaints were in each
instance fully enquired into and dealt with by the Council.
