This practice was objectionable, seeing that
we have no permanent resident subordinates on
the premises, and I recommended that an Order
be given directing the Keeper not to leave the
building for the purpose above indicated, and
that the Police, Ward Authorities, and others
concerned, be informed accordingly, with an
intimation that a hand hearse is always available,
but that the labour of fetching a dead body, and
taking it to the Mortuary, must be performed
by them, and at their expense. The Committee
adopted my advice, and the practice varied
accordingly.
It was not intended by this Order to interfere
with the existing practice of our own Sanitary
labourers removing bodies to the Mortuary
under the directions of the Inspectors when the
interests of the Public Health require it; the
charges incident to such removal being borne by
the Public Health Department as heretofore.
