26 house drains were examined and tested; 48 rooms were
disinfected for ordinary infectious diseases, 3 for Phthisis,
and 1 for Cancer.
WATER SUPPLY.
This is from the Colne Valley Water Company. All
houses are supplied on the. constant system. No complaints
received. All houses in district have water-closets
provided.
DUST REMOVAL AND DISPOSAL,
There is a weekly removal of house dust. This, has
been carried out satisfactorily by the Council's own men
and carts. The method of disposal is by tipping and
burning at the Sewage Works, but for the effectual
carrying out of this work a dust destructor will, in the
near future, be required.
SEWAGE DISPOSAL WORKS.
In the district there are about 54,500 feet of sewers.
Besides this, the sewage from 40,600 feet of sewers, in the
Harrow Weald portion of the Hendon Rural District is
received at the works for treatment. The Sewage is treated
by natural precipitation in tanks, the fluid part passed on to
filter beds of clinkers and finally dispersed over the land
before being discharged into the brook. Very good results
have been obtained. When the scheme was laid down in
1900 the population was then about 6,500 It was estimated to
deal with a population of 10,000. Since that time the Council
have had constructed in addition an open precipitation tank
to hold 160,000 gallons, and also a very efficient filter constructed
to deal with 150,000 gallons of sewage per day, in
order to keep pace with the increasing flow.
The Council have under consideration at the present
time a further scheme, and are applying for a loan to purchase
additional land upon which to treat the effluent, which
land is in the future to take the place of that at present in
use for this purpose and upon which the new tanks and
filters will be constructed.
