South Stifford is completely connected to the
Thurrock Grays and Tilbury Joint Board's main sewer,
and the district known as the Nutberry Estate in
North Stifford, is also sewered. In the remaining
portion of this Ward there are 59 cesspools and 26 pail
closets. The Parish of Orsett contains two sewerage
schemes, one inaugurated for the Baker Street area and
the second for the older portion of the village, provided by
a private sewerage works connected with osier growing.
In the parish of Fobbing all the actual village is
now sewered by a main drainage scheme, and all
premises with the exception of two are now connected.
At the present time there is no sewerage scheme
for the parish of Langdon Hills. During 1932 a public
enquiry was held with a view to co-operating with the
Rural District of Billericay in the sewering of a portion
of this Parish. In my opinion the time is long overripe
when this parish should be adequately dealt with
by the Local Sanitary Authority, and by the Essex
County Council in the matter of making up roads.
There are numbers of roads in the Parish almost
completely built up, where no sewers or properly paved
paths or roadways exist. The sub-soil of a large portion
of the parish is of heavy clay. In rainy weather the
resulting quagmire, for many months in the year heavily
contaminated with both sink and cesspool waste, must
be a great menace to the health of the inhabitants. In
the winter many of these roads are completely impassable
to wheeled vehicles, and considerable difficulty has
been experienced by my Department in the matter of
ambulance transport.
In the Parish of Mucking there is a private sewerage
scheme which serves the whole of Linford.
In the Parishes of Bulphan and East and West
Tilbury there are no sewers but the properties are so
isolated as to render the sewering of the Parishes
impracticable at the present time.
