Sewerage Disposal.—A large portion of the
western area of the district drains to the Disposal
Works of the Thurrock Grays and Tilbury Joint
Sewerage Works. The Works are situated 1¼ miles
north-east of Tilbury Station, and consist of Sewage
Disposal Works with Sedimentation Tanks and Circular
Revolving Distributors on Bacterial beds.
Total volume of sewage pumped :
1929 474,012,000 gallons
1930 468,993,000 „
1931 461,529,500 „
1932 452,451,000 „
1933 466,862,000 „
Average daily flow, 1,279,074 gallons.
2. Rivers and Streams.—The principal river in the
area is the Mardyke, which rises above Bulphan and
Orsett Fens, proceeding through Stifford into the
Purfleet District. There are various small streams, and
near the Thames many are tidal. They receive the
effluent from the Council's Sewage Works at Orsett,
Linford and Stanford-le-Hope.
3. (i.) Closet Accommodation.—During the year the
following were undertaken :
Number of Pail Closets converted to W.C.'s 18
„ „ Privies converted to Pails 2
(ii.) Public Cleansing.—Public Cleansing has been,
as in the past, carried out by contract and no complaint
of any magnitude has reached me in the matter. Indeed
I believe that the system adopted by the Council has
been eminently satisfactory as well as being efficient
and of low cost.
