Statement of work done under the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts.
During the year 1,954 samples of foods and drug's were submitted
to the Public Analyst for analysis. Of these samples 972
were purchased as test or informal samples, while 982 were
purchased officially.
Of the 982 official samples submitted for analysis 67, or 6.8
per cent. were reported to be adulterated or not up to standard,
and of those samples which were purchased informally or as test
samples, 74, or 7.6 per cent., were found adulterated or not up
to standard. The total adulterations reported were 142, or 7.2
per cent. of the samples submitted.
The percentage of milk samples found to be adulterated
was 5.1.
In 24 out of the 67 cases in which adulterations were detected
in the official samples, proceedings were instituted against
the vendor, and the total amount received in penalties under the
above Acts during the year amounted to £77 10s., and the costs
to £35 1s. 6d., making a total of £112 l1s. 6d.
