the works and general purposes committee.
The Works and General Purposes Committee, which
again chose the Bon. A. G. J. Ponsonby, J.P., to be their
Chairman, and Mr. Thomas Horn, their Vice-Chairman, met
twenty-two times. The work of this Committee, in respect
of the multiplicity and diversity of the matters which come
under their control, may be said to be heavier than that of
any other of the Standing Committees. Their duties range
over the supervision of roads and footways, street lighting,
public urinals, local sewers, street refuges, sewer ventilation,
St. John's-garden, tree planting, the execution of new
wood paving, asphalte, and sewerage works, the control of
signboards, projections on footways and other obstructions,
and of the construction of vaults,foot-crossings,and hoardings
under license, the re-numbering and re-naming of streets,
'
the consideration and carrying-out of street improvements,
and numerous other matters. Voluminous reports were
submitted to the Vestry at every meeting during the year.

The Street Cleansing and Sanitary Committee have held
nineteen meetings during the year, at which Mr. H. N. B.
Spink, or Mr. J. Fergusson, who were re-elected Chairman
and Vice-Chairman respectively, presided. The functions
of this Committee are sufficiently indicated by the title.
All matters appertaining to the street cleansing, watering,
and dusting of the parish, the removal of nuisances and
remedying of sanitary defects within the parish, and the
enforcement of the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts, come
within the province of the Committee.
Forty-nine bodies were received at the
mortuary in Millbank-street during the year.
Of these five, who had died of infectious disease, were
admitted by order of the Vestry's sanitary inspectors, three

Mortuary.
