nuisances by the construction in the same material of a sloping
plinth throughout the length of the building.
CONTAGIOUS DISEASES.
301 cases of contagious diseases were reported to the Sanitary
Department, of which 122 were cases of small-pox, as against 509
in the previous year. 114 of the small-pox cases were removed to
hospital, 8 could not be removed, and 3 died. Much care was
taken to prevent the spread of this disease, by isolating the sick and
disinfecting the houses.

DISINFECTANTS.
During the months of June, July, August and September,
11 tons of disinfectants were given away at the Town Hall to
12,631 persons.
FOOD, condemned and destroyed being unfit for human
consumption:—
1 carcase of a cow
5 boxes of soles
11 coal fish
½ pad of wet haddocks
15 lbs. of beef cuttings
15 lbs. mutton
