walls of the house be dug out and removed. Thai the walls be
underpinned on good concrete foundations laid on virgin soil,
built with proper damp courses, and eased externally with
impervious material. That the area within the walls under
floor be coeoreled all over and properly ventilated. That the
dry area, abutting on front wall be covered securely to prevent
admission of rain, and properly ventilated by chambers or flues
out in the front wall."
In the progress of the works so recommended, and ordered by
the Vestry a large portion of the walls were underpinned, but not
Oil virgin soil. This was not satisfactory; a futher communication
was, there fore, addressed to the Board insisting upon the brink
work being carried down to virgin soil. This was eventually done,
and proved to bo necessary, by the discovery under the walls
newly underpinned of a large cesspool, from which live loads of
excreta wore removed. The details of this ease are given because
they illustrate the necessity for a thorough, as against a superficial
examination of the subsoil of houses erected on old sites or
made ground.
Following upon the discovery of the cesspool the Hoard directed
all the ground within the walls of the house to be removed down
to virgin soil, the walls to be underpinned, that is, built up thereon,
and the space to be asphalted and adapted for cellerage. This has
been done, and the house is now in good condition.
ALBERT MEWS, HOXTON STREET—
The road-way and footpaths of the entrance to these premises,
abutting on the roadway of Hoxton Street, had long been in a foul
condition, arising from "public nuisances" and defective paving.
The lower walls of the adjoining premises, No. 174, Hoxton
St root, wore thereby soddened with liquid tilth.
The owner on being communicated with, and without notice
lining served, anting on my recommendation, has paved the roadway
and footpaths in a very substantial manner with granitic
