DISORDERLY HOUSES, &c.
Several places of improper character have been suppressed by
indictment, and others have been dealt with summarily. In some
cases the parties have quitted on notice without prosecution.
DISTRESS IN THE METROPOLIS.
During the recent winter the attention of the Vestry was called
to the severe distress which was alleged to exist among the labouring
classes in the Metropolis. Communications upon the subject were
received from the Local Government Board and others; but from
enquiries made there was no reason to believe that the distress in
this locality was exceptionally severe. But in order to afford
some relief the Vestry opened the Stone Yard, as far as possible, to
all persons desirous of labour and residing in the Parish, to break
up a quantity of accumulated material, and there is reason to
believe that this step was attended with beneficial results. The
total expenditure for this purpose was £149 11s. 4d., but of course
a corresponding amount of granite and other material had not to
be purchased.
THE TOWN HALL.
During the year the Large Hall has been let 124 times ; the
Council Chamber 10 times; the Committee Rooms have been used
by Local Societies, mostly free of charge.
The receipts for letting Hall, Council Chamber, and Committee
Rooms were £886 9s. 0d.
YESTRY AND COMMITTEE MEETINGS.
The number of Yestry and Committee Meetings held during
the year ended June 30th, 1886, is as follows:—
Number of Vestry Meetings 37
Finance Committee (including Meetings of Audit
