NILE STREET IMPROVEMENTS.
The joint Trustees of the Charities of St. Luke's and Cripplegate
having recently acquired the reversion of a considerable site of land
situate in Nile Street, (formerly Catherine Street), have with the
sanction of the Charity Commissioners erected thereon a Block of
Model Dwellings with Laundry, &c. A portion of this site projected
into Nile Stroet, reducing the passage through a certain part
to about five feet. The Trustees were desirous of widening this
thoroughfare to an uniform width and agreed with the Vestry after
some negotiations to surrender so much of the land on their estate
as was necessary for the purpose, on condition that the Parish
paved the same. A small portion however belonged to other
owners which it was necessary to purchase, which the Vestry did
under its compulsory powers. The works were finished and well
completed by the day of the opening of the Dwellings early in
June. The Metropolitan Board has consented to pay one half of
the cost of effecting the improvement, but as the accounts are not yet
closed the final statement of cost, &c., must be deferred till the
next report.
Appended are various Tables showing Receipts and
Expenditure, Assets and Liabilities, Loans Outstanding, Analyst's
Reports, List of Contracts, &c., &c.
I have the honour to be,
Gentlemen,
Your most obedient Servant,
E. WALKER,
Vestry Clerk.
