The above statement shows that 67 per cent. of the samples examined
were adulterated. This is the lowest percentage hitherto recorded, and contrasts
with 9.3 per cent. in 1906 and 8.2 per cent. in 1905. There is
no doubt that the amount of adulteration now practised in Islington, and
indeed in London, is not as great as formerly. This, however, was to be
expected, because year by year the authorities have made more stringent
endeavours to check it, and therefore an increase in the amount would almost
indicate that the attempt to grapple with it had failed.
The following table shows the result of the administration of the Act in
Islington since 1891.

Samples Analysed.—During the year 1,213 samples were examined, or which the Public Analyst reported 1,131 as genuine, and 82 as adulterated or sold contrary to the provisions of the Adulteration Acts.

Dairy Produce.— 932 samples of foods, which may generally be described
as dairy produce, were examined, of which 61, or 6.5 per cent., were adulterated,
as compared with 7.9 per cent. in 1904, 7.2 per cent. in 1905, and 1.02
per cent. in 1906.
