It will be recollected that there was an error amounting to nearly
50,000, in the estimated population of the Parish in 1891, when the
census was taken, and, consequently, all statistics based on the estimated
figures during the decade 1881-90 are more or less erroneous. I have
now recalculated these, and I find that the population at the middle of
each year should have been as follows:—
1881—283,721 1886—301,512
1882—287,191 1887—305,112
1883—290,711 1888—308,936
1884—294,267 1889—312,713
1885—297,867 1890—316,543
I have also estimated the mean population of the decade to have
been 299,857.
With these figures at hand it would, of course, be possible, knowing
the number of deaths, to calculate the mortality returns for any one year.
Unfortunately, these returns were not kept in such a manner as to lead
to accuracy, for, while all deaths in the hospitals of non-residents were
excluded, the deaths of residents dying outside the district in similar
institutions were not included. This source of error cannot, however,
occur in the future, as these deaths will be carefully tabulated, and duly
distributed to their proper registration districts.
Estimated Populations of the Sub-Districts :—
Upper Holloway 93,262
South West Islington 106,129
South East Islington 64,725
Highbury 60,223
Whole Parish 324,339
It is on these estimated populations the vital and mortal statistics
are based.
MARRIAGES.
The number of persons married during the year was 5,566, and,
therefore, 2,783 marriages took place. The annual rate of persons
married was 17.14 per 1,000 of the population.
