OPEN SPACES.
Edward and Barnsbury Squares.
The garden of Edward Square, and that in part of Barnsbury Square
which was opened to the public in September, 1889, both of which had
been maintained by the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association
since the time of their being opened, were taken over by the Vestry
on the 26th of January, 1890, under and pursuant to the Metropolitan
Open Spaces Act, 1877, as amended by the Open Spaces Act, 1887, and
are now maintained by it in the same manner as the other open
spaces under its control.
Proposed Recreation Ground, Corner of Thornhill and
Richmond Roads.
This ground was referred to in the annual report of last year.
It has since been purchased from the Trustees of the Thornhill
Estate for the sum of £2,000, half of which the late Metropolitan Board
of Works agreed to contribute. A condition was made by the vendors
that a road 20 feet wide should be made and paved in front of Malvern
Terrace, and this work has been carried out as described under the head
of Improvement Works. Plans have been prepared by the Surveyor,
Mr. Barber, for the laying out of the ground, and the work is now in
progress. Contracts have also been entered into for the erection of a
dwarf wall surmounted by wrought iron railings to enclose the ground.
The works are almost completed.
