DUSTING AND SLOPPING.
A statement prepared by the Accountant showing the
expenditure and receipts of the Vestry in connection with the dusting
and slopping of the parish during the year ended the 25th March, 1890,
and also summaries of the work carried out during the same period are
to be found among the appendices.
The amount received by the Vestry was £1,197 10s. 7d.
The sum of £2,951 2s. 0d. was charged to the Highways Department
for smiths and wheelwrights' work, for watering the roads, and
for cartage done with the horses and plant of the Vestiy; the sum of
£411 18s. Od. was also charged for work done for the Sewers
Department; and the sum of £3 13s. 0d. was charged for work
done for the Lighting and Sanitary Departments. These amounts being
deducted from the gross expenditure show the net cost of the collection
and disposal of the dust and slop for the year to have been
£17,716 0s. 7d., as against £ 17,115 7s. 0d. in 1888-9.
The net cost was, therefore, £600 13s. 7d. in excess of that of
the previous year, this excess being due to increased wages to the
dustmen, to the larger amount of slop collected, and to the purchase
of additional horses.
The sum of £4,427 9s. 8d. was paid for the loading and
freightage of dust and refuse, including dust shoots, a decrease of £356
odd on the previous years. Owing to a slightly increased demand for
ashes and breeze a larger quantity of dust also was screened, which
during the present year realized the sum of £213 18s. 8d. as against
£123 15s. 6d. last year.
The average cost per load for the collection and disposal of dust,
trade refuse, slop and sweepings was 4s. 1d. as against 4s. l½d.
for 1888-9.
During the year six horses have been sold, and nine have died or
were slaughtered. The average length of service of these horses was six
years.
Two extra horses were purchased last year, the stud belonging to
the Vestry having been thus increased to 88 including one cob.
