London Chamber of Arbitration.—At the
request of the London Chamber of Arbitration, a
notice calling attention to its objects has been
placed in the Town Hall.
Baths and Washhouses.—In accordance with the
resolution of the Vestry of the 25th February, 1897,
the Committee had decided that the statutory
meeting of the Vestry to adopt the Baths and
Washhouses Act should take place on Thursday,
April 29th, but it was thought desirable that a
Public Meeting should be first held to give the
inhabitants an opportunity of expressing an opinion
upon the subject; and a Public Meeting was
accordingly convened by the Vestry in the Town
Hall on Wednesday,the 28th April, at 8 p.m., when
the following resolution was passed, viz.:—"That
in the opinion of this meeting of inhabitants of the
Parish of Clerkenwell, it is in the interests of the
health, comfort, and welfare of the inhabitants that
the Vestry should at its meeting to-morrow evening
adopt the Baths and Washhouses Act."
The motion in favour of the adoption of the Act
at the Vestry was, however, lost.
Price of Gas.—In consequence of notice of an
increase in the price of gas, the Vestry resolved:—
That the County Council, and the Vestries and
District Boards north of the Thames be invited to
join this Vestry in sending a strong protest to the
Directors of the Gas Light and Coke Company
against their proposal to increase the price of their
gas, seeing that they have just declared a dividend
of 12¾ per cent., and that the price now charged,
2s. 10d. per 1000 feet, is greatly in excess of that
charged by the South Metropolitan Company, and
that the Board of Trade be informed of the action
taken by the Vestry.
