They also decided to hold a public meeting of the
gas consumers in Clerkenwell in the Town Hall, and
sent representatives to a great public meeting at the
Holborn Town Hall for the purpose of protesting
against the proposed increase, and requesting an
enquiry by the Board of Trade into the working
and management of the Gas Light and Coke
Company.
The Vestry also convened a Conference of the
Vestries and District Boards north of the Thames,
on Monday, March 28th, to consider the best
means of resisting the further exorbitant charges of
the Gas Light and Coke Company, and to try and
obtain for the gas consumers north of the Thames
the same scale of charges now operating in South
London. The Resolutions passed at this Conference
will appear in the next Annual Report.
Common Lodging-Houses.—The Vestry have
had the subject of Common Lodging-Houses
brought under their notice by the Vestry of St.
Margaret and St. John, Westminster, suggesting
that the law with regard to same should be consolidated
and amended, that an annual licensing
should be required, and the administration transferred
from the County Council to the Local
Sanitary Authorities. The Vestry have supported
the views of the Vestry of Westminster in the
matter.
The Vestry have also, in response to a letter
from the Medical Officer of the County Council,
given facilities to Common Lodging-house keepers
to free the bedding of their houses from vermin by
passing it through the disinfecting oven free of
charge.
