    VITAL STATISTICS. Births. —The number of births registered during the year was 9,478, being 75 less than the previous year, but 740 more than the average during the last 10 years. This makes an annual birth-rate of 33.6 per 1,000, the average birth-rate for the 10 years 1893—1902 being 34.8. Distributed to the various wards, the births were as follows:—
