the owner of any dwelling house to enforce the
execution of this work; on the contrary, the service
of a notice has always resulted in the work being
promptly put in hand.
Occupiers of small property greatly appreciate
this class of sanitary improvement, as cleanliness
is greatly facilitated and encouraged, and rain and
other water rapidly drains away into the gully
provided, instead of soaking into the foundations,
causing damp walls, or standing in pools upon
the surface until it becomes offensive.
The Council's Bye-laws relating to the paving
of yards and open spaces were approved by the
Local Government Board in August, 1898. The

House Drainage.
During the year under review the drains of 59
houses and premises have been examined and tested
after complaint made as provided by Section 41 of the
Public Health Act, 1875, and in every case were
found to be defective.
In 57 instances it was found necessary to
entirely re-construct the drainage system, and in 2
instances the drains were efficiently repaired.
