cases, but in each the service of a notice had the
desired effect of securing an abatement of the
nuisance.
Dust Eeceptacles.
As the result of notices served under Section 36
of the Public Health Act, 1875, 17 dwelling houses
have been provided with galvanized iron dustbins,
with tight fitting lids, where no ashpit or dustbin
previously existed; and two brick ashpits which
were in such a state as to constitute a nuisance have
been abolished and replaced by portable galvanized
iron dustbins.
Paving of Yards.
Clause 89 of the Council's Bve-laws provides,
that where it is necessary for the prevention or
remedy of insanitary conditions, the Council may
require the owner of any dwelling with which there
is any yard or open space, to pave the whole or part
of such yard or open space with a hard, durable and
impervious pavement of flagging, paving bricks,
concrete, or other suitable material.
Under this Bye-law the yards, and, where
necessary, the side passages, belonging to 69
dwelling houses have been properly paved with
concrete or other durable and impervious material,
thus preventing many nuisances that must of
necessity arise where the yards are unpaved.
In no instance during the year has it been
found necessary to take legal proceedings against
