During the year 8 Notices have been served for the abatement
of nuisances, which comprise principally defective ventilation and
repairs to defective sanitary appliances.
OFFENSIVE TRADES.
There are two gut-trimming businesses situated in Langdon
Crescent, Wall End. The work is confined to trimming fat from
the runners and cleansing ox-gut. Renewed application has been
made for a licence to scrape pig and sheep gut, but the Council,
after full and careful consideration, declined the application.
Reference has been made in previous Reports to the disagreeable
odours given off from the pans of fish frying establishments,
but up to the present no cheap effectual remedy has been generally
adopted. The ordinary hood in itself is a failure in cold weather,
and of little use at any time.
The collection of fish offal and butchers' bones is carried c ut
by private contractors. Occasional complaints are made in the
summer months of the offensive odours which are emitted from ihc
collecting vans. The fish offal is collected late at night, or very
early in the morning. The principal offenders are the bone and
fat collectors; the vans used for the work are open and unsuitable.
If hermetically sealed vans were used in this business and kept
clean the nuisance would be mitigated.
COMMON LODGING HOUSE.
The common lodging house situated in Albert Road, North
Woolwich, has been frequently visited. It has not been found
necessary to serve any Notices during the year for the abatement
of nuisances.
There is accommodation for 42 beds at this lodging house.
TRADE REFUSE.
The policy to collect refuse from tradesmen's premises twice
in every week, free of charge, continues to work satisfactorily, the
only conditions being that the refuse is contained in a suitable
receptacle and placed in a convenient position ready for the collector,
who calls regularly at the same day and hour. The refuse
is taken to the destructor works and destroyed.
