number of inmates as existed when the last Census was taken, the following figures were obtained:—
Beckton and North Woolwich Ward | 9,288 |
Central Ward—East | 23,817 |
Central Ward—West | 24,339 |
Manor Park Ward | 28,361 |
Plashet Ward—East | 19,946 |
Plashet Ward—West | 25,102 |
BOROUGH | 130,853 |
According to this calculation the estimate of the RegistrarGeneral
is nearly 6,000 too high. I am of opinion, however, that
the number of persons per house has, in most of the Wards,
increased somewhat since the last Census was taken, and, therefore,
the above local calculation rather tends to under estimate the
population. The truth, doubtless, lies between these two estimates,
but at this length of time from the Census year it is
impossible to make any more definite statement.
For the purpose of calculating the various rates in this report,
the estimate of the Registrar-General has been used, in order that
our rates may be compared with other large towns, the populations
of which are similarly estimated by the Registrar-General.
DENSITY OF POPULATION.
The area of the Borough, excluding inland water, is 3,326
acres. The population at the middle of the year was 136,421, the
density per acre, therefore, averages 41 persons. At the last
Census in 1901 the number per acre was 33.
WARD DENSITY OF POPULATION.
This varies considerably in the different Wards, depending very
largely on the open spaces and amount of undeveloped land which
exists. The density of population per acre is lowest in the Beckton
and North Woolwich Ward, and yet the density per house in this
Ward is the highest in the Borough. Plashet Ward West has no
open space, and practically no undeveloped land, and the density
