WATER SUPPLY.
The Borough is supplied by the Metropolitan Water Board,
the quality is therefore good, and the supply constant.
Attention has been paid during the year to the position of the
drinking-water cisterns in all new houses that have been erected.
These have often been placed in unsuitable positions, and
frequently so near the ceiling that inspection and cleaning of the
interior was impossible. They are now, in every case, being
placed not less than 18 inches from the ceiling, and in a suitable
and accessible position.
SUMMARY OF IMPROVEMENTS.
In various parts of the Report are mentioned improvements
which have been effected during the year, others are also mentioned
as still required for the benefit of the Public Health. For
convenience, a summary of these is given here:—
During the year the additional buildings at the Hospital,
mentioned in last year's Report, were opened, these include a
Ward for Scarlet Fever patients, Hospital Laundry, Porter's
Lodge, and Steam Disinfector. In addition to these, Stables and
Ambulance House have also been erected, and are now in
occupation. Plans have also been sanctioned by the Local
Government Board, and tenders have been invited for the erection
of an additional Scarlet Fever Ward to take the place of the
Convalescent Home. This Ward is to be of two storeys, the
upper floor being for the accommodation of the Scarlet Fever
Staff. A ward containing 12 separate cubicles for the isolation
of various cases needing observation is also being provided, and
it is also proposed to erect a new Mortuary at the Hospital.
The Scarlet Fever Convalescent Home (Rancliffe House) has
been closed, as it was considered unsafe, and the patients have
been transferred to the old Scarlet Fever Ward on the Hospital
site, pending the erection of the new Ward. From both an
administrative and financial point of view, the centralization on
one site should prove to be a distinct advantage.
