SURVEYOR'S REPORT.
For the Year ending Lady Day, 1899.
Gentlemen,
I beg to submit my Sixteenth Annual Report on the
various matters connected with the Departments under my
control.
PAVING DEPARTMENT.
The following are the principal carriageway and footway
paving works executed during the year: —
BOROUGH HIGH STREET.
The whole of the carriageway of this thoroughfare from St.
Thomas's Street to the southern boundary has been repaved
with 3 x 6 x 9" creosoted yellow deal blocks on the existing
concrete foundation.
In order to lessen the great inconvenience caused by this

vehicular traffic at seven o'clock on the evening of Wednesday,
July 22nd, 1898, and the work vigorously proceeded with, the
new blocks being paved in at the rate of 30,000 per day, when
we could get them, the whole work was carried out in eight
working days, and was finished in the afternoon of July 1st, and
was opened for traffic on Saturday the 2nd. We could have
been two days earlier, but the blocks could not be delivered fast
enough for us.
The area paved is about 3,750 supl. yards, and the number
of blocks used about 162,000. The estimated cost was £1,322,
and the actual expenditure £1,349, or only £27 above the
