UNION STREET.
The carriageway and footways of this thoroughfare have
been repaved from Gravel Lane to Guildford Street.
The granite pitching with which the street was formerly
paved was taken up, and a foundation of Portland cement concrete
6 inches in thickness formed, on which was laid a thickness
of 1½ inches of Val de Travers compressed rock asphalte ; the
footways were also relaid, partly with new 2½ inch York paving
and part with re-squared paving.
The area asphalted is 2,863 supl. yards ; the area paved with
York stone about 12,000 supl. feet. The estimated cost of the
work was £2,231 9s. 9d.. and the actual cost, after allowing for
establishment expenses, £1,980 19s. 9d., a saving of £250 10s.
BRUNSWICK STREET.
The carriageway of this thoroughfare, which was formerly
macadam, has been taken up throughout its whole length from
Stamford Street to Collingwood Street, and an asphalte carriageway
substituted. A Portland cement concrete foundation was
laid and then paved with a thickness of 1½ inches of Val de
Travers compressed rock asphalte. The incline at the north end
of the street at the junction with Stamford Street has been
paved with redressed granite pitching, the fall being too steep
for asphalte. The area of carriageway paved with asphalte is
1.273 supl. yards, and with granite pitching, 182 yards. The
estimated cost was £866 10s., and the actual expenditure
£792 6s. 9d., a saving of £74 3s. 3d.
CANVEY STREET.
The carriageway and footways of this thoroughfare from
Sumner Street to Southwark Street have been repaved, the
granite pitching with which the street was formerly paved being
replaced by compressed rock asphalte; the footways have also
been partly repaved with new York stone and partly with old
stone re-squared. The area of carriageway paved with asphalte
is 733 yards supl., and the footway area paved, 2,800 feet supl.
The total cost of the work was £464 15s. 10d. and the estimated
cost £548 15s. 7d., a saving of £83 19s. 9d. has therefore
been effected.
