SURVEYOR'S REPORT.
For the Year ending Lady Day, 1897.
Gentlemen,
I beg to submit my Fourteenth Annual Report on the
various matters connected with the Departments under my
control.
PAVING DEPARTMENT.
We are steadily progressing with the abolition of the
Macadam roads in the District; about four only remain, and
these will be taken in hand in due course. The substitution of a
clean and healthy asphalte paving for the old Macadam is a great
improvement.
The following are the principal carriageway and footway
paving works executed during the year: —
STAMFORD STREET.
The carriageway of this thoroughfare from Blackfriars
Road to Broadwall has been paved with Jarrah wood paving
blocks 3x5x9 inches. The blocks have been laid close
without any joint, and grouted in with cement and sand. The
area paved is 3017 supl. yards, excluding six crossings. The
total cost of the work, including every item of expenditure,
was £1610 3s. 5d., being at the rate of about ten shillings and
eightpence and one sixteenth of a penny per yard, the wood
blocks costing £10 17s. 6d. per thousand delivered on the works.
The number of blocks used was 133,000.
