SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD.
The carriageway of this road from the Water Company's
Offices to the City Boundary, has been paved with new and
redressed pitching, on a new foundation of 6 inches of lias
lime concrete. 450 supl. yards of new stone were laid, and 900
yards of pitching relaid and redressed.
CLINK STREET.
The whole of the carriageway of this street has been relaid
with redressed granite pitching on a foundation of 6 inches of
lias lime concrete; the footways were also put in order. The
work in this street occupied some considerable time, the
narrowness of the carriageway, and the character of the traffic
prevented good progress being made.
UPPER GROUND STREET.
A portion of this street from the east to the west end of
Old Barge House Street has been paved with redressed pitching
on a lias lime concrete foundation. New footways have also
been laid.
BLACKFRIARS BRIDGE INCLINE.
A new refuge for foot passengers has been constructed on
this incline, the refuge is placed in the centre of the carriageway
at the termination of the Tramway Company's lines, and is a
great convenience for persons using the tramcars, it also divides
the traffic in this busy thoroughfare. The refuge is lighted by a
Siemens lamp.
DEPOT.
In consequence of the widenings of the South Eastern
Railway, our depot in Ewer Street, which consists of arches
rented from the Railway Company, is becoming rapidly less
suitable for our purposes owing to the light being shut out. The
arches are practically useless to us unless we have good light.
Arches in semi-darkness make it dangerous for men handling
stone, or stone-dressing, and there is great difficulty in getting
a proper day's work done under such circumstances. I may
also remind the Board that the lease of our scavenging depot in
Lavington Street has less than three years to run, and I think
it very unlikely we shall be able to renew it, it is also much too
small for our purpose. Some steps should be taken for acquiring
suitable premises for a depot at an early date.
