"Both samples were clear and contained the merest trace of
suspended matter. They were of a pale yellow tint when viewed in the
2ft tube. Thev contained and yielded in grains per gallon—

"Remarks.— These results show the condition of both supplies to
be decidedly worse than during last month. The Southwark and
Vauxhall Company's water is actually bad, and the Lambeth water but
little better. The amount of organic impurity present in the former
sample is nearly twice as much as is found in the same sample when
the river in in good condition.
" Much of this organic impurity is, however, of vegetable origin
(from decayed leaves, &c.), and, therefore, not so objectionable as animal
matter. Nevertheless, water containing much vegetally-derived organic
matter becomes very objectionable on being stored up in tanks or
cisterns. It is particularly necessary at thin time of the year that
domestic cisterns should be frequently emptied and cleaned out.

"Report on two samples of Water received February 2nd. The
samples were enclosed in Winchester quart bottles, sealed, and labelled
respectively, 'Water taken from the Southwark and Vauxhall Water Co.'s
Main in Southwark St., February 2nd, 1893, Arthur A. Grist,' and
'Sample of Water taken from the Main, Blackfriars Road, Lambetk
Water Co.' February 2nd, 1893, by Samuel Broadhead.'
"Both samples were clear, and of a very pale yellow tint when

" Remarks.— These results indicate both supplies to be in worse
condition than in November, and this notwithstanding the comparatively
dry weather during last month. The amount of organic
impurity present in each case is more than twice the amount present in
