LITTLE PULTENEY STREET IMPROVEMENT.
Daring the past year this improvement has been completed.
Little Pulteney Street has been widened, and is now nearly
one and a half times its original width. It has also been
lowered, thereby reducing its gradient, and the gradient of
the new street cut through in place of Great Crown Court to
connect it with, and now being a continuation of, Rupert
Street. Groat Windmill Street has also been widened so as
to admit a double line of carriages. Little Crown Court was
originally entered from Great Crown Court (now rupert
Street), through a narrow archway; this has been done
away with, and the entrance is now the same width as the
other part of the Court, and is open to the sky. The carriage
ways have been paved with asphalte, the footways by the new
buildings with Wilkes' "Eureka" paving, and the remainder
with York stone.
STONEYARD.
In November last your Vestry purchased a third horse and
sweeping machine to facilitate the cleansing of the streets.
This necessitated the enlargement of the stable and harnessroom.
Advantage was taken of these alterations to re-arrange
the Stoneyard, and accordingly the sheds which were originally
put up for the use of casuals from the Workhouse and which
were not at all as now required. were pulled down and a new
row of sheds erected. At the same time the whole ot the
Stoneyard Paving was re-laid. Seperate sheds are now
provided for the Works, Scavenging, Sewers. Orderly Boys'
and Lighting Departments, Pipes, Lime, Cement, &c. Your
Vestry also gave me directions to construct a snow plough
and obtain two horse scrapers, which I did.
