REMOVAL OF SNOW.
In anticipation of a possible heavy snowfall, the Vestry early
in the winter sought and obtained the consent of the Thames
Conservators and the Metropolitan Board of Works, to the
casting of clean snow over the parapet of the Victoria Embankment
into the river. Conditions were attached to the consent
with a view to preventing damage to the embankment wall or
the impeding of traffic on the river.
A heavy snowstorm occurred on the night of December 26th,
and although some difficulty arose in obtaining a sufficient
number of extra men at the start, owing to the holiday season,
all the main streets were rendered fit for traffic by midday
on the 28th, and the whole of the thoroughfares were cleared
by the 31st. The work of removal was considerably expedited
-and the cost lessened, by the casting of the snow into the
river. The adoption of this course moreover prevented the
necessity of temporarily stacking snow in the squares and
open spaces in the Parish, as was done in January, 1886.
The following is a statement of the extra men, horses, and
carts, employed in clearing the streets and removing the
snow:—
