SCAVENGING, DUST REMOVAL, &c.
The cost of Scavenging and Dust Removal last year, as
appears by the Accounts, exhibits an increase of no loss than
£1, 190 1s. 8d., compared with the expenditure for the previous
year. This increase is mainly duo to the higher contracts
which the Vestry were compelled to accept last year, but
some addition was made to the amount by the experimental
cleansing of all the streets in the Parish after midnight on
Saturday weekly during the summer months; this work
cost £137 7s. 4d.
With a view to expedite the work of cleansing generally,
and to enable the streets to be swept a second time in the day
in exceptionally bad weather, a third sweeping machine and
horse have been purchased. When not required for scavenging
purposes, tho Vestry's horses are put to general work, thus
reducing tho cost of horse hire for street watering and carting.
Sixteen orderly bins have been fixed at various refuges to
receive the horse-droppings collected by the boys.
In anticipation of the expiration at Lady-day of the contract
for street watering entered into in 1884, the Vestrv invited
tenders by public advertisement, and that of Messrs. W. Mead
& Co., of Paddington, was accepted at a schedule of prices.
The contract will run for a period of three years from Lady-day,
1887, terminable, on notice, at the end of the first or second
year at the option of the Vestry.
The following is a statement of the number of loads
reported to have been removed from the parish during the
