Extra labour cost £128 16s. 5d., carting £19 4s. 9d., and
salt £20, making a total additional outlay of £168 1s 2d.
The ordinary staff of scavengers and an unusually large
number of carts and waggons belonging to the Contractor
were also employed almost exclusively in dealing with the
snow for the first four days of the week.
It may be remarked that on the occasion under notice,
the streets were cleared far more rapidly than last year,
although the depth of snow was probably fully as great, In
fact only two complaints of delay were received, the complaint
in each case being from a resident in the squares, which were
purposely left until the last, in order that the through traffic
might bo assisted with the least possible delay.
With a view to still further reducing the interruption to
traffic arising from snowfalls, the Vestry have Authorised the
Surveyor to construct one or two snow-ploughs and to obtain
two horse-rakes. The latter will also be available for use
for scavenging.
CONTRACTS FOR WORKS AND MATERIALS.
The Contracts entered into in 1884 for a period of three
years being about to expire, the Vestry invited tenders in
February by public advertisement. Particulars of the
contracts now in force are given on page 113.
In each case the contract, as before, is tor three years,
terminable, on notice, at the expiration of the first or second
year, at the option of the Vestry.
STREET LIGHTING.
On the 25th March, 1886, there were 728 public lamps in
the various thoroughfares of the Parish, 70 which were
