the course of the summer of 1883, and to raise the cost of the work
with the rates for the year.
Although no new sewer works were undertaken, a large amount
of time was occupied in cleansing and otherwise attending to
existing sewers and drains. Details of this description of work will
be found in the Reports of the Surveyor and the Medical Officer of
Health, which follow the Vestry's Report.
REFUGES.
During the past year two refuges have been formed; one in
Piccadilly, at the top of the Haymarket, and the other in Regent
Street by Jermyn Street.
The following is a complete list of refuges in the Parish:—

REPAIR OF ROADS OPENED BY GAS AND WATER
COMPANIES.
Attention was directed by the Vestry of Clerkenwell to a hardship
frequently caused to paving authorities by the imperfect
manner in which roads and footways are repaired by Gas and
Water Companies after having been opened for the purposes of the
Company, and that Vestry suggested that an endeavour should be
made to extend the period of liability of the Company to make
good subsidences in surfaces repaired by them from one year, as
provided by the Gas Works Clauses Act, 1847, to two years,
