26 Parish of Saint George the Martyr, Southwark.
This plan might be adopted with great advantage in the ne
street now in course of formation through the Mint from Blackma
Street to Great Dover Street.
A great improvement has been effected in the Churchyan???
Borough High Street, by the work done under the direction of th???
Special Committee. Employment was given to a number of me???
who were then out of work, and also a number of men were employe???
on the roads of the Parish, part of the wages being paid out of th???
Mansion House Relief Fund.
With reference to the lighting of the Parish, I beg to submit th???
following Report on the subject:—
The remarks as regards the amount of Gas consumed by th???
Public lamps in this Parish would apply to all Parishes where the Ga???
Companies are paid a fixed amount per annum per lamp, and which,
maintain, is an unsatisfactory mode of payment, for the following
reasons:—
1st.— The burners with governors, where new and in perfect order
consume the specified amount of Gas of 5ft. per hour, provided th???
pressure on the main is sufficient; but all the burners get older, an???
dust or carbon gets into the slit of the Gas jet, they consequentl???
consume considerably less than 5ft. of Gas, even with a full pressur???
on the mains, and alter midnight, when the pressure is reduced to
minimum by the Gas Company, the burners will frequently consum???
25 to 30 per cent. under the proper quantity.
2nd- that the burners not consuming a proper amount of Ga???
is a direct to the Gas Company at the cost of efficiency in th???
lighting of the Parish, whereas, it we had the average meter system i???
operation any deficiency in the consumption of Gas would be a direc???
saving to the ratepayers.
