Lighting.
During the past year one additional gas lamp has been provided and fixed at the
north-west corner of Cow Court, Tunnel Square, making the total number of lamps
lighted by the Surrey Consumers' Gas Company 371. (For particulars of Contract
see page 8.)
Cleansing, Watering, &c.
Mr. Alfred Thomas Hobman, again obtained the Contract, for the supply of Men,
Horses, and Carts, at per day for man, horse and cart, for the removal of sweepings
from the whole of the roads and streets (after the same has been swept up bv the
labourers employed by the Vestry,) to a shoot provided by the Vestry.
Mr. A. T. Hobman also contracts for the supply of horses, harness, and drivers, for
the Vestry's water carts. (For particulars of Contract see page 8.)
Dusting.
Mr. William Etheridge is the contractor for removing the dust, ashes, &c., from
the dwellings of the inhabitants, and out of the parish.
The Vestry have also arranged with Mr. Etheridge, that he shall, when required,
take and remove from mills, factories, and premises trade refuse, &c., upon payment
to him by the occupiers thereof at and after the rate of 2s. per load of one cubic yard,
or 3s. per load of one cubic yard-and-a-half of such refuse. (For particulars of

Messrs. Hallet, & Co., of Rotherhithe Street, Manufacturing Chemists, having
required the Dust Contractor to remove the ashes and clinkers from their furnaces
without payment, this the Contractor refused to do, upon the ground that such ashes
and clinkers were trade refuse, Messrs. Hallet, in order to try the question obtained
a summons against him at the Greenwich Police Court, upon the hearing of which,
and alter mature consideration, the Magistrate gave his decision, that such ashes and
clinkers were trade refuse, and dismissed the summons.
Removal of Nuisances, Sanitary Measures &c.
During the past year 292 Notices have been served in duplicate under the
"Nuisances Removal Act," upon complaints made by the Medical Officer of Health
and Inspector of Nuisances, 249 of which nuisances have been abated by the removal
