Clarendon Street Lavatory.
Continuous complaints having been made for years
as to the want of urinal accommodation near this
locality, and several schemes have been proposed
to meet the difficulty, but in every case the objections
raised by the surrounding inhabitants were so great,
that any attempt to construct a urinal above ground
had to be abandoned. During the early part of the
year the nuisance became so serious, and complaints
being addressed to the London County Council, the
Works Committee took the matter in hand and tried
all they could to negotiate with the owner for the sale
of one of the unfinished buildings on the N.E. side of
Clarendon Street, which were built upwards of twenty
years since, but he asked such an exorbitant price
that, when the matter came before the Yestry on 2nd
August, 1892, they determined to adopt the alternative
scheme proposed, that was to construct an underground
lavatory. Plans and specifications were prepared,
and tenders received, for carrying out this work.
The construction was commenced on the 20th of February,
and is now progressing, and will, in all probability,
be ready for the public by the end of July next, the
accommodation being for men only, viz., three closets
and ten urinals, with lavatory and attendant s room.
New Buildings.
A new wing building has been added to the
Harrow Road Board Schools, near western boundary of
