REPORT, 1888-9.
materials and quantities have been abstracted from
the before-mentioned number of loads:— 16 tons of
Coals, 62 cart loads and 19 boat loads of Hard Core,
3,541 tons or 189 boat loads of Garbage or Soft Core,
611 tons of Bones, 100 tons of Rags, 58 tons 2 cwt.
of old Iron, 3f tons of various Metals, 13 tons of
white Glass. There has been sorted and sifted 17,509
chaldrons of Ashes and 8,616 chaldrons of Breeze;
of this quantity, 15,359 chaldrons of Ashes and 6,637
chaldrons of Breeze were sent away by boats, and
2,150 chaldrons of Ashes and 1,979 chaldrons of
Breeze have been removed by purchasers' carts.
The early part of the year was very unfavourable
for selling the Ashes and Breeze, but towards the end
of the autumn prices advanced a little, and I am in
hopes better prices will be obtained during the next
season.
Slopping.
The contract for the removal of the dry Sweepings,
Slop, Scrapings, and Snow taken off the public
highways was let to Messrs. Mead & Co., at Is. 4d.
per ton. This amount included the expenses of
tonnage, haulage, and the use of a shoot. The number
of loads thus sent away was 24,026. The maximum
number of loads collected in one week beino; 527 and
the minimum 257, or a daily average throughout the
year of 61'92 loads, 6,898 horses, vans, and carts
being employed in the collecting.
