under 1 year of age, 227 of children under 5 years, and 112 of
persons aged 65 years and upwards.
The rate of infantile mortality in Paddington was 147
deaths to 1,000 registered births. In London it was 158 ; in
the 27 largest provincial towns it averaged 156, ranging from
112 in Hull to 222 in Blackburn. In Dover the infantile
death.rate was only 89 per 1,000 registered births, whilst in
Exeter, during the same period, it was 210, and in Ystrady.
fodwg 216. The deaths of children under 5 years of age
constituted 39'8 per cent, of the entire mortality, and were
mainly attributable to diseases of the zymotic, local, and
developmental classes.
