From the seven principal zymotic diseases there were 97
deaths, as compared with 50 during the corresponding quarter
of last year. These figures show a death-rate of 3.58 per 1,000
inhabitants per annum, but as they represent only those
deaths which actually occurred in the parish, no cognizance
being taken of the infectious cases removed to extra.
parochial hospitals, it is obvious that they afford only a
partial indication of the extent to which zymotic disease
prevailed in the parish. In London the zymotic death-rate
from these diseases was equivalent to an annual rate of 4.14
per 1,000 inhabitants ; in the 27 largest provincial towns it
ranged from 1.34 in Halifax to 8.17 in Brighton. In England
and Wales the deaths corresponded to an annual rate of 2.61
per 1,000, against an average rate of 2.75 in the first
quarters of the ten previous years, In St. Helens the rate
was 1227 per 1,000 inhabitants.
Smallpox.—Whilst this disease has been gradually declining
in London and its immediate neighbourhood during the
last four quarters, and has been simultaneously increasing in
other parts of England and Wales, it is still causing more than
four times as many deaths in Greater London than in the
rest of the country.
In Paddington during the quarter there was no death
from smallpox. One case (a non.parishioner) was removed
from St. Mary's Hospital to Deptford, and another from St.
John's Sub.district to the Smallpox and Vaccination Hospital
at Highgate.
Measles.—In Paddington, as throughout the country, the
