there were 2,084 houses sanctioned to be built and drained, and
1,62!) houses and buildings completed during the year in Blackheath,
Lewisham and Brockley. These are quite record numbers,
and show the rapid developement of the District. The whole of
the house drains were tested by water before the trenches were
filled up, and this involved a large number of testings.
There were 126 new frontages laid. The whole of the Sewers
vested in the Board were carefully cleansed and flushed. The
larger brick sewers were scrubbed with brushes, and the smaller,
or pipe sewers, were brushed out with brushes of the same diameter
as the sewer, in the same way as a gun barrel is cleaned by means
of a rod. All this involves a great amount of labour, which is unseen
and unknown to the general public. A large number of old
drains were examined, reported on, and relaid, and stoppages
removed. At page 118 there is a table giving the Sewers sanctioned
and constructed during the year, which amount to 2 miles
1,334 yards, and which required a large amount of supervision.
DEPOTS, SHOOTS, &c.
The difficulty in obtaining shoots for road detritus or slop
is increasing. I have not been able during the year to obtain any
free shoot.

The following is a list of the shoots I have used, and the price paid in each case:—

Locality of Shoot.Amount.
Blagden Street (G. Murrell)1s. per load.
Bromley Road (J. Laird)1s. per load.
Bromley Road (J. Watt)1s. per load.
Chmdleigh Road (J. Graham)1s. per load.
Courtrai Road (W. Busk)6d. per load.
George Lane (J. C. Pickernell)1s. per load.
Manor Park Estate (Johnson & Aldridge)6d. per load.
Rushey Green (W. Joy)1s. per load.

A total of 19,815 loads of slop and road sweepings were disposed
of at the above shoots during the year, and 273 loads of
dry sweepings were delivered to private householders who applied
for the same, making in all a total of 20,088 loads.
