IMPROVEMENTS, FRONTAGE LTNES, BUILDING
ACT CASES, &c.
A most important improvement was carried out in High
Street, Lewisham, between the Albion p.h. and the turning to
Lee Bridge. The whole of the kerb and channel on the west side
was taken up, 7 feet of the footpath, which was very wide here,
was thrown into the roadway; and on the east side the kerb and
channel was taken up and set back one foot, thereby widening the
roadway to the extent of 8 feet, such of the kerb and channel that
was in good sound condition was used again, and where necessary
new was provided. In doing this 568 feet run of new 12.in. by
8.in. flat granite kerb, and 564 feet of new three stone channel
was laid. The paths were made good; that on the west side with
gravel, and that on the east side with tar paving.
One of the enclosures in High Street, Lewisham, opposite
the Clock Tower, was done away with, and the ground thrown
into the roadway, giving an extra width at this point of 14 feet
The kerb at the "Salisbury Arms" was lowered and the gradient
of the footpath greatly improved.
Last year an improvement was made in Bromley Road, at
the northern corner of Berlin Road. This year a further improvement
has been made by setting back the southern corner of
Berlin Road, the entrance to this road being widened upwards of
30 feet, and a bold rounded corner has been made. To carry out
this work it was necessary to divert the old watercourse and to lay
a 24.inch glazed stoneware surface water drain. The old kerb
and channel in Berlin Road was taken up and relaid as far as it
would go.
The triangular piece of ground at the junction of Brockley
Grove with Brockley Road, has been enclosed with an unclimbable
iron fence and planted with shrubs.
A similar improvement was carried out at Blackheath, at the
junction of Tranquil Passage and Montpelier Vale.
