NEW SEWERS.
The first portion of the Brockley Valley Sewer, from Ladywell,
through Chudleigh Road, under the Shortlands and Nunhead
branch ot the South Eastern and Chatham Railways, to the boundary
of the late Mr. Noakes'estate, was completed. The work was
done by Mr. John Neave. The Sewer is 3,674 feet long, egg
shaped, 3ft. 9in. by 2ft. 6in., and constructed of brick and concrete,
with eight manholes and ventilators, and one side entrance
and ventilator. The actual cost was £4,530. I expect the
second portion of the sewer, to drain the Woolmore Estate will
soon be commenced. In both cases the owners largely contributed
to the cost of constructing the same. The estimated cost is
£2,400 Os. Od. When the whole of the Sewer is completed the
cesspools into which the houses drain in Brockley Rise can be
abolished without much expense.
The extension of the 3ft. 3in. by 2ft. 2in. egg shaped brick
and concrete sewer in Hither Green Lane was completed during
the year. The work was executed by Mr. J. T. Gloag. The
Sewer is 1780 feet long, with three large manholes and three
small manholes, all of which act as ventilators. The Sewer will
give facilities for draining the remaining portion of the St.
Germans Estate, the Board's Hospital, &c., &c, and can be
extended for the drainage of adjoining property. A C. Corbett,
Esq , M.P., the Freeholder of the St. Germans Estate, contributed
largely to the cost, which amounted to £1,200.
The table at page 119 gives the surface water drains constructed
during the year. They amount to a length of 1542 yds.
As the District developes I fully expect a surface water outlet
will have to be provided throughout the whole of the District,
and then these surface water drains can be connected with such
outlet. For years past it has been my wish to provide surface
water drains in all new streets, at the cost of those who lay out
the ground for building purposes, and as a matter of fact this has
been done. So far as I know the Board of Works for the Lewisham
District are the only Board in the whole of the Metropolis
who have attempted to carry out such a system, and I feel certain,
sooner or later, the wisdom of doing this will be seen, and large
sums of money saved to the ratepayers.
From the table at page 119 of this report it will be seen
