In September last the Vestry were called upon to
elicit an expression of the opinion of the Ratepayers, on
the subject of the maintenance of Tolls in the Mile End
Road, and for that purpose convened a meeting of the
inhabitants, at which resolutions were passed in favor
of their abolition. These tolls will cease on the 31st
October, 1866, and after that time so much of the Mile
End Road, as is within this Hamlet, will come under the
control of the Vestry, who will be liable to repair and
maintain it. No doubt this will add to the expenditure
and somewhat increase the burdens of local taxation, but
against this increase of outlay must be set off the saving
which will arise from the side roads, which have
been much used by persons evading the tolls, being
henceforth subject to their legitimate traffic only. At
all events there is no doubt that the public voice had
declared so loudly and unequivocally against the maintenance
of tolls on the Metropolitan Roads, that their
abolition was inevitable.
