estimated cost of £2,000, on condition that the London
County Council bear one half the expense, and carry out
the work as a Public Improvement, and Newington Vestry
contribute the remaining fourth of the estimated expense,
and that this Vestry join with the Newington Vestry in
petitioning the London County Council to carry out this
improvement, and that the seal be affixed accordingly."
The resolution was thereupon adopted by the Vestry.
Toulon Street, Wyndham Road. Your Surveyor
having brought before the Committee the proposed
Improvement for widening Toulon Street, at the junction
with Beckett Street by acquiring a portion of land forming
part of "The Emigrant" Beerhouse, then in course of
re-erection. Your Committee viewed the "locus in quo,"
and having regard to the fact that this was an extension of
an improvement already partially carried out, ground
having been acquired from the adjoining Owner for the
widening of this Street, it was considered most desirable to
complete such Improvement, the thoroughfare at the
"Emigrant" Beerhouse being; but 19 feet in width the
Committee recommended, and the Vestry on the 25th
February last, resolved,
"That your Committee be empowered to treat with
the Owner and persons having an interest in this property,
for the purpose of acquiring the necessary land to widen
the thoroughfare, and that, if necessary, notice be given to
oppose the renewal of the beer license."
The license was eventually refused by the Licensing
