various parties interested. An objection was also taken by,
the Council to the Assessment of The Lodge, Myatts Fields
and having regard to the decision of the London Assessment
Sessions in the Battersea Park case, your Committee
determined to take this Assessment out of rating.
The most difficult part of your Committee's duty was
the Assessment of Public Companies, which, as the Vestry
is aware, is involved in considerable difficulty. The Clerk
was instructed to obtain estimates from various Assessment
Surveyors, and ultimately Mr. Charles Barker, with the
consent of the Vestry, was selected to carry out this
important work, and he valued the following companies:—
The Crystal Palace Gas, The London, Brighton, and South
Coast Railway, The Kent Water Works, The Lambeth
Water Company, The London, Chatham and Dover Railway
Company, The Southwark and Vauxhall Water, and the
London Tramways Company. The Kent Water Works,
The Lambeth Water Company, The London, Chatham and
Dover Railway Company, The Southwark and Vauxhall
Water, and The London Tramway Company agreed to the
figures as settled by Mr. Barker; whilst the following
companies were represented before your Committee by
Solicitors or Surveyors as objecting to the figures of Mr.
Barker:—The Crystal Palace Gas Company, The London,
Brighton, and South Coast Railway, and The Surrey Commercial
Docks Company appealed to your Committee, but
the increased Assessments (with the exception of that of
The Surrey Commercial Docks Company), as estimated by
Mr. Barker, were adopted by your Committee. The assessment
of the South Metropolitan Gas Company was dealt
