The total working cost of "Slopping arid
Watering" for the past year, including keep of Horses,
Wages, Wheelwrights, Superintendent, Horse-keeper,
Slop Shoot expenses, Smith's Work, Repairs to Tools,
Farrier's Work, Repairing and Painting Plant, &c.,
amounted to £11,246; but as this sum includes the
expense of Cartage of Materials on to the Roads, Road
Rolling, and incidental Cartage Works and expenses,
which under the contracting system would have
entailed an additional payment to the contractors,
of about £2634 beyond the amount for Slopping and
Watering, this sum has to be deducted from the
total as above, viz. :—£11,246, which gives as the
actual cost of Watering and Slopping, the amount of
£8612 equal to about £125 per mile.
This cost per mile agrees very nearly with that
which resulted under the contracting system before
alluded to, on the supposition that the same rate of
charge would have been maintained, but which in all
