SANITARY LEGISLATION.
Customs & Inland Revenue Act (53 & 54 Vic., Cap., 16).
The twenty-sixth clause of this Act empowers a landlord to call
upon the Medical Officer of Health to visit and examine premises
which are in the occupation of persons paying not more than seven
shillings and sixpence per week rent. If upon examination the
Medical Officer finds that due provision has been made for the
sanitary requirements of the tenants, and that the house for which
the certificate is required is so constructed as to afford suitable
accommodation for the families or persons inhabiting it, he must
certify accordingly.
Upon presenting this certificate to the proper official, exemption
from house duty is granted to the landlord, who thus obtains, without
payment, a money benefit from a public officer.
