INQUESTS.
The Coroner held 222 inquests, about seven per cent. on the
total mortality, or one in every 14.4 deaths. The violent deaths
numbered 82, two and a half per cent. of the total deaths. Only
two deaths were uncertified.
RESPIRATORY DISEASES.
The deaths from this group of diseases, exclusive of Phthisis,
were 8.31, or more than one-fourth (2G.6 per cent) of the total
mortality from all causes and corresponded to a rate of 6.59 per
thousand population at all ages.
This exceptionally heavy mortality was due to the preponderance
of deaths from lung disease in the first and last months in the year.
In January there was a sharp outbreak of Influenza, and through
the deaths ascribed to this disease only numbered twenty-three,
there is no doubt that many of the deaths returned as Pneumonia
and Bronchitis were really cases of Influenza.
Table "H" separates the mortality from pulmonary diseases
into quarters and shews the age distribution, and also the rainfall
and mean temperature for each period of three months.
